My New Smile at Bangkok Smiles Dental Part 2

Since I last met Dr Piyamas for a grueling 2 hours of preparation for the Porcelain Veneers, it’s been 5 days (met her on Thursday and next appointment was the following Monday).

5 days was all it needed (weekends included) to manufacture my new Porcelain Veneers. It was exciting and I was really looking forward to having the new, permanent ones on! :)

Check out what I did during my 8 days stay in Bangkok here.

For the 5 days, Dr Piyamas put on temp veneers on me, one of which was loose. Fortunately, I managed to put it back on quite easily and made it stay there till my appointment.

On the morning of my appointment, 2 of my temp veneers had slightly black stains on them, which kind of worried me but Dr Piyamas said it was normal and nothing to worry about.

She took about 2.5 hours for this second appointment. First she showed me the Porcelain Veneers fitted on a mock impression of my teeth.

I don't really know how I can best express my feelings when I saw this. It was like, I've dreamt of this all my life. The search for beautiful teeth and here they are, right in front of me, specially for me. My new teeth, just hours away from being permanently bonded to my current teeth. It was pretty life-changing.

She then spent the next 2.5 hours cleaning, sticking the Veneers on, and making sure the gaps between each tooth are still present. A special cement was applied to the veneers and the veneers were then placed on my tooth. Once properly position on the tooth, Dr Piyamas then shined a special light beam to my veneers, which activated the chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden quickly.

She also took care to ensure that none of the new Veneers were too high and that it felt natural for me when I bite.

Here’s me on the Dentist’s chair. I had to cover my mouth cos my lips were kinda swollen after the local anesthesia!! Btw, I really enjoy having local anesthesia! Dr Piyamas is super gentle with the injections. I can’t even feel much when she injects them in! <3!

My beautiful smile begins NOW! :D

The last step was for me to return for a follow-up visit in 2 days to check out how my gums are responding the the veneers and to examine if my bite is okay.

Here are some pictures to share after my Veneers got fixed on!

It’s amazing. I couldn’t stop smiling. Dr Piyamas is a genius and I cannot thank her and the team at Bangkok Smile Dental enough. I feel like my life has taken a turn for the better. The unevenly shaped teeth I used to have is now gone.

I feel so much more confident and I look forward to showing more of my teeth instead of taking close-mouthed smiles now! :D

This is Dr Piyamas. She’s very motherly and I feel extremely comfortable with her. She’s always smiling and very welcoming during all my appointments. I had like a million questions on after-care and she patiently went through it all with me.

Thank you, thank you so much!

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try my best to answer them below! :)

My New Smile at Bangkok Smiles Dental Part 1

Hope you've read my post on why I came to Bangkok in search of Cosmetic Dentistry services to improve my smile, because here's a continuation! :) Oh and also read on for special discounts/privileges from Bangkok Smile Dental for my readers! :)

On the day that I arrived, Bangkok Smile Dental was so kind to send a driver to pick me up at my hotel and then dropped me off at Bangkok Smile Dental at the Asoke Branch (very near Terminal 21 – the new shopping mall!). This is a service that they provide if you let them know in advance via email prior to arrival and if you are staying at the Sukhumvit downtown area.

This really helped a lot as I had a 2pm appointment on the very first day that I arrived in Bangkok. Bangkok traffic is CRAZY!

Once I got there, I stepped in and was kinda surprised to see so many Caucasians in the waiting area and the whole waiting area in front of the reception desk was full too!

Bangkok Smile Dental photo BSD_zps055e53e7.jpg

Strangely, I felt a little more at home being surrounded by so many tourists.

I was asked to fill up a form about myself on this mega impressive dental booking system and was led to the waiting area for my turn. There were refreshments for those waiting.

It wasn’t long before I was introduced to the Dental Specialist Dr Piyamas. She too could speak very good English! I love her very much la!!

She took a look at my teeth and said that it looks healthy… I proceeded to tell her that the upper teeth are unevenly shaped and most of the teeth are already at it’s best because I did whatever I could to make it better with prior white fillings which are weak and fall off once every 1-2 years.

She was super efficient. She took a look and proceeded to use only 5 mins to put on some temp cement mock veneers and showed me how Porcelain Veneers can help to improve my smile. And she did it in just 5 mins!

Before & After Bangkok Smile Dental photo BEFOREampAFTER_zps1f0d57fd.jpg

You notice that my 6 front top row teeth desperately need to be reshaped and evened out. What you see now in the before picture are already the best my teeth can look with the help of a lot of white fillings already. :( These fillings fall off once every 1-2 years which is really sad and costly to maintain!

Before & After Bangkok Smile Dental photo BEFOREampAFTER001_zpsc064613e.jpg

She did a quick mock on only my front 4 teeth. When I finish my Porcelain Veneers, it's going to be even more awesome. This was just a very rough mock up and I was already happy with my “new” smile. I can't waitttt!! :)

There were pros and cons to consider and she wanted me to consider carefully as Porcelain Veneers is an invasive and non-reversible procedure.

Pros:

• Immediate remedy to a beautiful smile
• Less invasive than crowning (Veneers generally don't require the extensive shaping prior to the procedure that crowns do, yet offer a stronger, more aesthetic alternative)
• Veneers can last up to 10 years or more with good dental hygiene
• Porcelain veneers are stain resistant
• Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well
• They provide a natural tooth appearance

Cons:

• I will have to be wary of never biting hard food with my front teeth
• I will have to wear a mouth guard every night to prolong the life of my veneers and to also protect against my teeth grinding
• This process is irreversible. The dentist will shave off 1mm off the surface of your natural tooth in order to put on the new veneers. Once the veneers wears off, you’ll have to get new ones on again
• Veneers are usually not repairable should they chip or crack.

Read all about Veneers here.

Dr Piyamas was really nice and she really made me feel comfortable. She never pressured me about going ahead to do it. She asked me to consider the pros and cons carefully and to take my time to consider.

I was led to another doctor, Dr Ming, who spoke perfect English. She went through the costs of the procedures I wanted and worked out the subsequent appointments for me. She was efficient, friendly and very helpful.

So here’s what I was going to be doing at Bangkok Smile Dental:

1)   Scaling
2)   Laser Whitening
3)   Filling (had a broken one)
4)   Porcelain Veneers on the Upper Teeth X 6
5)   1 pc of Soft Mouth Guard

Total Cost: S$3,400

Bangkok Smile Dental photo SAM_0483_zps3e8d175a.jpg

They managed to slot me in for Scaling and Laser Whitening on this same day too! Yay!

I didn’t know how overdue I was for scaling. Teeth felt totally clean after 15 mins of scaling. The dentist who did it for me was very nice and gave me a blanket to keep me warm cos the aircon was a bit cold. She also advised that I use more fluoride in my toothpaste to protect my tooth.

I have never done Whitening in my life. I never had an issue with the colour of my teeth but since I’m already here and it was recommended by Dr Piyamas, I decided to do this as well.

Bangkok Smile Dental photo SAM_0389_zpsaed4a065.jpg

I took a pain killer prior to this cos the dentist said it might be a bit sensitive during whitening. I took the pill happily. LOL. I also remember my colleague who did this before said it would be very sensitive. The whole procedure took one hour. Honestly it must be very tiring for the Dentist. She has to hold the UV shine device on my teeth for so long and have to keep track of time too!

The RESULTS!!

Bangkok Smile Dental Laser Whitening photo SAM_0397_zps29b7f27c.jpg

My teeth were a shade of white lighter than before! The sample tooth that the Dentist is holding up was the colour of my teeth BEFORE the whitening. :) Yay!

I love how white it is now! And here I was thinking I don't need whitening when just a quick 1 hour of whitening will make my teeth look so good. :)

Do note that after Laser Whitening, your teeth will be sensitive and will take about 1-2 days to recover. I was lucky to feel ok overnight. They do prescribe painkillers for you to take if it gets too sensitive to bear. I didn't have to eat any. The sensitive feeling came on strongly that night before I slept but once I slept and woke up the next morning, I was all brand new again.

Things I couldn't eat were like coloured foods (tom yum, curry, etc.) and coloured drinks (coffee, syrup, coke, etc.) and no smoking too (not that I smoke. :P ) for 48 hours after the whitening procedure. After 48 hours, I went out and got my Espresso Frappe. Haha!

Next post coming up soon will be about my Porcelain Veneers! Stay tuned k!

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try my best to answer them below! :)

To Bangkok for a beautiful smile!

I took Tiger Airways from SIN to BKK and stayed at Mercure Siam Hotel (National Stadium BTS) for the first 3 nights and then moving over to my favourite Citin Pratunam (at Pratunam Area near Baiyoke Sky Hotel) for the next 4 nights - both of which are very good hotels.

I’m staying at Mercure Siam Hotel cos I got a very good deal for the hotel room, thanks to a friend of mine, Ed.

So anyhooo, the purpose of my trip is not JUST shopping, it’s to improve my smile!

When I told my peers around me that I am going to Bangkok for 8 days, they will always go, “o.O why are you going there for so long???”

Bangkok Smile Dental photo Bangkok_zps2a87e753.jpg

And then I tell them that I am seeking dental treatment there in Bangkok! And the next reaction will be a whole slew of questions like:

Huh! Why are you going all the way to Bangkok for Dental? Why not Singapore? Is it save? Are you sure it’s save? Is it something people do (i.e.: go to Bangkok just for dental treatments)? Can the Dentist speak English? What if they don’t understand what you want??

I am going to Bangkok for 8 Days in search for a beautiful smile.

I have done a lot of research and this has been more than 6 months in planning before making the trip here.

The next time you go Bangkok, keep a lookout. You’ll notice many dental clinics near touristy areas and you’ll notice many Caucasians in these clinics! It’s quite amazing.

I chanced upon Bangkok Smile Dental when I was still in Singapore and emailed them. They were quick in responding and the English was really quite good. I was asked to send them some photos of my ugly teeth and I reluctantly did. I was advised to go for Porcelain Veneers but this will be subject to an examination by the Specialist when I arrive.

Here are some FAQs I get so I thought I’ll address it all here:

1) Is it safe?
Yes it is! At least that’s what I can say for the clinic I went to – Bangkok Smile Dental. They are ISO-certified. The only dental clinic in Thailand that has international accreditations for both dental lab and dental clinic!

2) Can they speak English?
Well, not ALL the counter staff can speak fluent English. They can manage with basic English. There is a clinic manager that’s always on duty and she speaks great English.

Initially I was worried about the language barrier, but after a long email exchange with the good people at Bangkok Smile Dental, I was assured that I will well taken care of. The specialists and doctors there spoke superb English too.

3) How much is it? Is it really cheaper than Singapore?
Yes!! It’s a lot cheaper!! I was quoted SGD1,500 per tooth for Porcelain Veneers in Singapore. In Bangkok, it’s 1/3 the price! *Gasp* At Bangkok Smile Dental, I was quoted SGD400 per tooth.

Fillings that are SGD90-100 in Singapore are merely SGD35 in Bangkok.
Laser Whitening are usually SGD1,200 to 1,500 but in Bangkok, it's less than SGD400! Check out their price list here.

No wonder it is a growing trend for Singaporeans to travel there for dental work. 1/5 of their clientele come from New Zealand and Australia!

4) You fly all the way there, take leave from work… is it worth it?
My flight is SGD230. My hotel (if I stayed all the way in my usual hotel) would be SGD50 per night X 8 = SGD400.

Total for flight + hotel = SGD630nett (cheaper if you go with someone to share the hotel room with)

As for the leave from work, Bangkok is a great place to rest, relax and shop till you go mad! Don’t even get me started on the food!! I’m going to be sharing details of my trip on my blog here too. :)

So to cut the long story short, YES, definitely worth it.

5) Are the Dental Specialists there any good?
If they aren't I don't think they will make guarantees as seen here or publish all their specialists' credentials here. But more importantly, email them, get a feel of things. You must personally feel comfortable about it. I know I only made my final decision after I spoke to the Dental Specialist!

I hope this answers all your questions. If you have more, do feel free to comment below and I’ll do my best to answer it. :)

Meanwhile, day one has been an extremely long day for me. Woke at 5.45am, flew to Bangkok, went straight to Bangkok Smile Dental’s Asoke branch where I made an appointment at 2pm for a consultation and some prep work. Stayed tuned for more updates! I'm definitely excited about my new smile!!!

Can't wait for more confident big toothy grins :)
